Grcia is well-known for its high concentration of artists, actors, musicians, photographers and designers, who give a bohemian atmosphere to the zone, but also for its huge variety of ethnic groups and the great number of exotic restaurants. If during your stay in Barcelona you wish to visit a particular area of the city, you definitely need to stop in Grcia, walk on its streets and squares and grab the chance to admire the art nouveau buildings. If you go to Barcelona during San Medir feast you will have the possibility to visit this neighbourhood, but also to learn something more about Spanish traditions.

The feast is meant to praise San Medir, a Christian martyr who lived in Barcelona at the beginning of the 4th century, a period characterised by the Christians persecution carried out by Diocletian. Many pilgrims go to Barcelona every year, in particular they go to the chapel that was built where San Medirs home is believed to have arisen, to pray and thank the Saint and to take part in a traditional procession. This tradition originated in the 16th century, and with the passing of time it has become an established habit among thousands of people. Nowadays it is not only considered as an important religious event, but also as a cheerful folkloristic feast. On the day devoted to Saint Medir, indeed, not only pilgrims arrive in the city, but also many visitors and tourists, who enjoy the procession on the city streets and the merry atmosphere of the feast.

Around 30 groups of people coming from different neighbourhoods parade, and with their colourful costumes, their flags, their decorated carriages and horses they create a unique show. Although this event is appreciated by visitors of all type and age, San Medir feast is particularly fit for children and for sweet-toothed people, who do not only have the possibility to watch a peculiar parade and to discover a Spanish tradition, but also to stock up with sweets. The climactic moment of the procession, indeed, is the launch of the sweets: from the floats that take part in the parade, indeed, thousands of sweets are launched, and if you want to be sure to gather a great amount of it, youd better watch the parade from the Calle Grande de Grcia. The event ends every year after the procession with a pyrotechnical show in Jardinets de Grcia, and visitors can enjoy these amazing fireworks eating the sweets that they have gathered in the afternoon.
