Barbra Streisand Finally Sings Jazz In Love Is The Answer

Thinking about Barbra Streisand singing jazz shouldnt be too hard to believe. She does an incredible job at singing everything shes tried, from movie theme songs to gospels. So why not jazz?

Listening to her last album Love Is The Answer, which was produced in 2009, you will notice that Barbra sings as if she owns each song and performs them with a genuine love for jazz. In an interview, Barbra called the album, a toast to life.

Love Is The Answer is Streisands first new album since Live In Concert 2006. Barbra performs in a cabaret style as a jazz singer of emotional clarity, depth and maturity. The renditions are warm and as intimate as late night thoughts of past heartbreaks seeking solace.

The jazz album provided the opportunity for Barbra to work, for the first time, with the Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall and her quartet. As a result, a refinement and sensual poignancy are offered to the listener in the albums spare and subtle arrangements.

A special treat to the production of the album is legendary songwriter and Grammy-winner arranger Johnny Mandel. Mandel had worked with Streisand back in 1993 on her Back to Broadway album. He even worked with Diane Krall arranging and co-producing her 1998 Grammy-winning When I look In Your Eyes. Mandel brings his sublime orchestrations to Love is Answer.

Some of the albums jazz standards that caught my heart are:
In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning - the jazz standard closely associated with Frank Sinatra.
If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas) - a quintessential version of the Jacques Brel standard performed in English and French.
Spring Can Really Hang You Up - a song Streisand first sang in a St. Louis club at the age of 18. However, this is her first studio produced version of this jazz standard.
Gentle Rain - a gentle bossa nova rendition that originated from Black Orpheus, the motion picture that introduced the world to the rhythms of Brazilian music.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - the quintessential dreamy standard, originally written as a show tune by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach for the 1933 operetta Roberta, covered by Nat King Cole and the Platters, among others.
Some Other Time - a rarely-covered gem composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Comden.

I am delighted that Barbra Streisand decided to make Love is Answer, focusing on the jazz standards. Out of all the songs on the album, I have to say In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning is my favorite. Its frothy, melancholy and endearing.
