Ballroom To Modern Jive - Can You Learn To Dance At Home?

By:

The biggest problem with taking traditional dance classes is remembering what you did last week. If you take a break for any length of time then the chances are that everything you learnt will be forgotten and you have to start again. This can make for painfully slow progress and that in turn leads to an increased chance of just giving up. So, to over come this, can you learn to dance at home, at your own speed and in your own time?

Learning to dance can have its rewards but can also be extremely frustrating. Signing up to a local dance class means that you will only learn at the speed dictated by the slower members in the class and when you do learn something you still have to remember it from week to week. If you have a break or move on to a different dance you may have forgotten everything by the time you get back to it.

To overcome these issues the obvious way for dance instructors to plug the holes in peoples memories and teach those wishing to learn a little extra at home is to teach dance moves online, via video, from their own web sites.

There are no shortage of individuals and companies trying to teach you dance moves and routines online, some are free to use, some promote DVDs and some are subscription based members areas. The question is can you learn to dance in front of the PC in your office or spare room and if you can what is the point, isn't there a social aspect to dancing that means you should do it out in the big wide world?

When trying to learn to dance at home, and especially online in front of your PC, the biggest factor must surely be which dance you are trying to learn. A Waltz or Foxtrot covers a lot more ground than Modern Jive or Salsa. For most people a Waltz in the spare room would be out of the question where as a quick burst of Modern Jive may well be do-able.

Regardless of the type of dancing they do many teachers are giving it a go and offering online videos and lessons for you to try, after all, the pupil is highly likely to already be taking 'real world' lesson and just be wanting a quick reminder of something they have already done or may be a quick new step to throw in here and there.

There are no shortage of websites offering free videos of great quality to get you started and ease you in to the whole 'learning online' way of doing things. Of all the dance styles the websites covering the more traditional ballroom dances must be the most ambitious as these must be the most problematic to both teach and learn via your PC, however, if you break it down in to individual steps rather than whole routines it starts to make the whole process easier by taking up less space. Even if you can't cover as much ground as you would like to at least it gives you a great head start when you do get onto a real dance floor .

When it comes to learning to dance at home in front of your PC the dance styles that lend themselves best are the dances that are more stationary and when being learnt can be done in a relatively small area. These dances are the likes of Salsa and Modern Jive which, if necessary, can be performed very easily in front of a PC and then jazzed up when you get to the dance floor. Basically you learn the steps at home so that next time you get on to the dance floor you have a great head start .

So, can you learn to dance at home? Yes you can learn moves. Yes you can speed the learning process. Yes you can cover far more than from a normal class but you still have to go and show off your new found skills in the real world.
