Balloon Sinuplasty - The Best Way To Treat Sinusitis

By:

Sinusitis is an infection occurring in the air-filled spaces in your sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty is the best way to get rid of this problem. It is a non-surgical endoscopic technique which is found to be less invasive than the traditional sinus surgery.

Sinusitis develops when the normal mucus drainage can not occur due to blockage of sinus openings. The symptoms of this infection may include serious headaches, eyesores, breathlessness, unusual nasal discharge, nausea and vomiting. If this infection is not treated properly then it may persist as chronic sinusitis. Sinuplasty is an FDA-approved method which is very cost effective. It involves the use of a microscopic endoscope and a catheter based system for proper access of sinuses. The technique is carried out under general or local anesthesia to avoid any uneasiness to the patient. During the process, a wire catheter is introduced through the nostril which is fitted with a tiny balloon. The exact location is visualized by the microscopic endoscope. The balloon is inflated for a short duration at the target site to open the blockage. The balloon is then deflated and removed. An irrigation catheter may be used to flush out any mucus or pus from the sinus. The balloon can push the bone lining the sinus opening which later reforms into a more favorable wider gap.

Baloon sinuplasty is quite advantageous as compared to the other traditional methods. Clinical researches have proved it to be the safest method of relieving sinusitis. Unlike the other surgical approaches, this technique uses small and flexible devices which are not much traumatic to the sinus tissue. There is minimum bleeding and pain associated with this procedure due to less bone and tissue removal. Though the recovery time varies with every patient, a sinuplasty patient tends to improve faster. In case, the patient has severe recurrent sinus infection or presence of polyps then the sinus treatment may be combined with septoplasty or partial turbinate reduction.

With a low post-procedure discomfort and quicker recovery rate, sinuplasty has become a preferable method for sinusitis treatment. Indeed, the procedure is reliable but it must be performed by expert balloon sinuplasty doctors.
