Bag Care 101

By:

Bags made from synthetic or easily washed materials like cotton and canvas are easier to care for than those made from material like leather or suede. Machine washing the latter will ruin them, yet they need to be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid scratches, rips, and mold from taking over the bag.

If you are using your bag on a daily basis, its a good idea to invest in one that is versatile and easy to care for such as a Zipit Zipper Bag. These bags come in a range of colors and styles and require a simple wash to get them clean again.

Here are some tips to keeps in mind when it comes to bag-care, courtesy Zipit Zipper Bags.

Do not overfill your bag as it might lead to rips and tears, and spoil the shape of your bag. This is especially true for bags that do not have a hard base.

Zips, clasps, and buckles need regular checks to see they function well. Avoid letting them come in contact with water, grease, or perfumes, which can ruin their looks and functionality.

Lighter colored bags look dirty quicker, so if you do anticipate using your bag on a daily basis, consider going in for darker or multi-colored bags.

Store bags separately in tissue paper, so the colors do not rub off each other, and the bags remain protected when not in use. Avoid hanging them as it puts a strain on the handles. Instead, place them on a shelf or in a large box. You may also want to stuff them with tissue paper so they retain their shape. This is especially important for leather and canvas bags, which can crease quite easily.

Always wash bags on a light cycle, and remove any attachments or accessories before the bag gets washed. Avoid the dryer and instead lay your bag flat and gently air-dry it.

For bags that cannot be washed in the machine, hand wash them using a gentle soap, or clean them with a wet cloth or unscented baby wipes. You may also find fabric cleaners work well to tackle any stains on a cloth bag.

Leather bags require special care, and you should invest in a specially formulated cleaner for them. Brushes also work well on bags that require a general dusting off such as a suede purse.

Always use soft cloths when cleaning your bag and harsh or abrasive material can damage the outer skin of the bag.

If the zipper gets stuck on your bag, do not force it. Instead take it to a repair shop to get them to fix it.

Ensure your bags are kept out of sunlight and dust and away from humidity. Air them out regularly to discourage the growth of mold and mildew.

A little care can go a long way in ensuring your bags bring you many years of joy.
