Bad Habits Can Make You Older Than Your Age By 12 Years

A new study has shown that if one has formed the following four bad habits smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet, you may appear older than your real age by 12 years.
The study was conducted by tracking nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years. Overall, 314 of the people tracked had all four unhealthy behaviors and 91 of them, or 29 percent, died during the study. On the contrary, as to the 387 healthiest people with none of the above four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.
The hazardous behaviors were: smoking tobacco; drinking more than two cups of alcohol more than three times per day for men and more than two times for women; taking no more than two hours of physical exercises per week; and taking in fruits and vegetables fewer than three times one day. A combination of these habits tremendously increased the risk of death and made people who were involved look as if 12 years older than their real ages.
The healthiest group covered those who never smoke or who had quit; those who never drink alcohol or drink a little such as females who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who had spent at least two hours on physical activity weekly; and those who took in fruits and vegetables more than three times a day.
According to one of the leading researchers Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo, people do not need to be extreme to be in the healthy category; as long as one can add the healthy habits up, the effect will also be obvious. It should be possible for most people to achieve the good habits. For instance, the ordinary fruit such as one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable required in the study, Kvaavik said, none of the standards required extreme abiding and only a modest consumption is enough. All the participants tracked in this study were 4,886 British adults at ages of 18 and older, and the average age was 44. Researchers randomly selected them from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey.
Later, the following research conducted by the same research group, after checking Death certificates in the for the next 20 years, had found that the most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy habits in life.
