Bacterial Vaginosis Home Treatments

By:

Bacterial vaginosis home treatments are exceptionally popular, as are other natural methods of treating many common conditions. Indeed, given the choice, over 75% of Americans would opt for this option rather than expensive over the counter medication or prescription drugs which often come with unpleasant side effects.

Fishy smelling vaginal odor and the accompanying discharge is most often caused by bacterial vaginosis, or BV. This is causd by an imbalance of the natural bacteria which populates the vagina. There are two types of bacteria in the vagina-good and bad. The "good" bacteria (Lactobacillus) usually controls the "bad" bacteria (Gardnerella and Mycoplasma) and equilibrium is normal.

Exactly why the bacteria becomes "imbalanced" is not fully understood, but it is thought that overwashing and the use of certain douches or soaps around the vaginal area could be a cause, as could a new sexual partner or even a general infection, where resistance to infection is low. Under normal circumstances, the Lactobacillus maintains a slightly acidic balance in the vagina and this prevents the growth of potentially harmful bacteria.

When levels of Lactobacillus become lowered and Gardnerella and Mycoplasma have the chance to proliferate, then bacterial vaginosis will occur. Doctors will sometimes prescribe antibiotics to kill off the bacteria, but the huge downside to this is the fact that antibiotics do not discriminate between good and bad bacteria, and both types are subsequently killed off. Although this temporarily gets rid of the smell and the discharge, as soon as the bacteria begins to populate the vagina again (which it naturally does) there will be insufficient "good" bacteria to kill off the "bad" and the whole cycle begins again. This explains why over 70% of women who take antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis will have the condition again within a few months.

If you have had bacterial vaginosis for more than a few days, then you should consider bacterial vaginosis home treatments if you do not want to take antibiotics. Failure to eradicate the condition can result in pelvic inflammatory disease and, at worst, infertility.
