Bacterial infections can be caught by women in child bearing age, but they can also appear by those who are at menopausal period. Bacterial infectiosn of the vagina (the vaginal infection is often called bacterial vaginosis) appear when there is an imbalance of healthy "good" bacteria causing the overgrowth of "bad" bacteria (such as gardenerella bacteria) in the vaginal mucous membranes.
This infection can lead to inflammation in the vaginal area.

Some of the factors that can result bacterial infections of the vagina are:

1. Disturbance of vaginal pH balance.
It is believed that the intake of sugary food can increase the risk of this condition. And the decreasing of sex hormones after menopause may also be responsible of the disturbance.

2. Using perfumed douche, feminine spray or "harsh soap". The chemical agents used in the products may irritate the vagina and reduce the ability of healthy bacteria in fighting the harmful bacteria.

3. Antibiotics medicines can kill all kind of bacteria including the "good" bacteria. Good bacteria such as lactobacillus can prevent the overgrowth of the "bad" bacteria. So when there is a lack of "good" bacteria, the bacterial infections in the vagina can keep back coming over and over.

4. Wearing underwear made from synthetic fabrics or tight pants.
Synthetic fabrics and all kind of body-fitted clothes can prevent air circulation in the vaginal area and create sweat. Moist area is an ideal place for BV to grow.

5. Using birth control. A certain birth control such as IUD (intra-uterine-device) can increase the risk of having bacterial vaginosis.

6. Performing unsafe sex intercourse or having multiple sexual partners can encourage the development of infections of the vagina

Some women suffer from bacterial vaginosis occasionally but others experience this problem very frequently. It is reported that more than thirty percent of women experience recurring bacterial vaginosis although they follow some treatments.

The following are common symptoms of BV

1. Itchiness in the vaginal area
2. Burning sensation after urinating
3. Irritation and pain during and after sexual intercourse
4. Redness and swelling of the inner part of the vaginal lips
5. Excessive flow of the vaginal discharge
6. Foul smell of grayish vaginal discharge

If you find the above signs of bacterial infections in the vagina, consult your doctor to examine your health condition. The doctor may send you to the lab to check your vaginal discharge and tissue sample under microscope. If your are diagnosed with this condition, do not leave it untreated because it may lead to some more serious complications.
