The motor for driving the sales leads in internet businesses, especially small ones, is the use of economical search engine optimization, also known as SEO. It's the simplest and most vital way to increase, and ensure, name recognition and business profits.

Small businesses used to drive sales by being the best at something; even the local corner grocery store was the best small family business in the neighborhood. The point is, however, everyone knew the members of that small family, and everyone knew they had the best store.

Now, the neighborhood is the World Wide Web, and business owners who don't use SEO to get name recognition are at a big disadvantage. The small family, once their business started to fade, would either close up shop and vanish into obscurity, or move to the big highway where all the customers were, so their neighborhood got a lot bigger.

SEO makes the internet neighborhood a lot bigger by using keywords. Those are the hot phrases, single words and popular slogans that drive a business, and they need to be included in, and liberally sprinkled throughout, the copy on any businesses main website page. If the business is automotive, keywords for their most popular auto care products should appear; if the page is a teen oriented shop, keywords for the latest teen fashions and fads are vital.

These keywords are recognized by a search engine, which automatically takes customers to the site that has them embedded in its content. The customers see that this site has the very products that they typed into Google or Bing or Yahoo, and they become a buyer. That is how to get customers and keep them, quickly and easily. In a nutshell, it is also how economical search engine optimization works.

That is where backlinks come into play. Backlinks are connections from a business website to other businesses with similar products or web content or services. People browse one link, see another business and link to it. That other business automatically gets more customers. That is producing a sales lead; it is literally that simple. And the leads are guaranteed, because the customers linking to the other business already know that it has what they're looking for.

In a way, it's the same as when someone moves into the neighborhood, and right away his neighbors tell him the Fantini store has the best pasta in town. That man has been backlinked into a sales lead.

SEO, and backlinks, have always been the best friends of big and small business.
