Backing Up Your Data: Saving Yourself From Future Headaches

By:

It's inevitable; sooner or later your computer will crash. And when it does, you won't want to take that time to wonder what will happen to all of the data on your computer. Most people have their whole lives on their computers; pictures, videos, documents.

If you lose these files, what will you do? Perhaps a computer technician may be able to salvage them, but it isn't a sure thing. The only sure step you can take now so that you don't regret it later is backing up your files. Backing up your files is a relatively quick and easy process that most people ignore or assume they don't have the time for.

However, using a hard drive backup program (sometimes called a "ghosting" program) to back up your files may save you a lot of headache and frustration later on, if and when your computer takes a hit. Safeguard yourself now so that you don't have to worry what will happen in the future.

There are many ways to back up your files, all of which are easy and painless. First you may want to decide which files you want to back up. Some individuals may have a list on important files they want to perform a back up on, while some might want to simply back up their entire computer.

Remember that some of the data on your computer, such as drive files and programs can be replaced easily in the event of a crash, but user created files (meaning, files created by you) are not replaceable using default files. These are the files that are the most important to perform a back up on.

If you only have a few files that you want to back up, the fastest way may be to simply create a free, web-based e-mail account for yourself online, and then send yourself the files that you'd like backed up. This way, if your computer crashes, it'll be easy to reinstall them on a new computer, so long as it has an internet connection and you have access to the account.

If you have another computer or laptop already, you could also copy them onto that computer and vice versa. Many choose to use a simple external hard drive or flash drive to back up their computers, a great choice if you have a lot of files that you'd like to back up. Finally, data ghosting software can help to back up your files by using a find and extract program that does the work for you.
