Why Do Pregnant Women Experience Back Pain?

Back pain and pregnancy back pain are caused by different factors. A pregnant woman experience back pain because the back muscles receive strain from the baby growing in the womb of the mother. During the second trimester, the added weight of the baby causes the uterus to become heavier and the center of gravity also changes, thereby causing changes in the posture especially during the third trimester when the mother starts leaning backwards giving the muscles at the back more pressure and strain. Thus, two first conditions that link back pain and pregnancy are strain and posture.

Back pain during pregnancy can also be caused by the weakening of abdominal muscles. This is because the abdominal muscles are very vital in having a healthy back. Thus, any problem with the abdominal muscles can cause a big impact on the back. The abdominal muscles of pregnant women tend to become stretched and weak. This results in back pain. Weak abdominal muscles also place pregnant women at risks of back injuries. This condition is another factor that links back pain and pregnancy.

Another important factor that can contribute to back pain is the pregnancy hormone. To make the baby's passage through the pelvis easier, pregnancy hormones relax the ligaments in the weight-bearing joints located in the pelvis. Though the loosening can make the joints become more flexible, it can lead to back pain especially if the joints become too flexible and mobile. This is another link between back pain and pregnancy.
