Baby's Coming Out One Way Or Another! There's No Going Back.

So What's All the Fuss About Giving Birth?

I thought I'd just share a few quick thoughts with you today, one day before baby is due to enter this world about how I'm really feeling about the impending birth. For all you mums out there, you will probably be able to relate to some or all of this and for the first time mums-to-be, hopefully you can take something away from this to think about. Some of it may help to alleviate some of the anxieties you might be having right now (on the other hand, it might not!)

What's Your Strategy?
As a second time mum, I obviously have some idea of what to expect when it comes to the labour and birth as well as what the first few weeks are going to be like with a newborn. But when you already have a child and you are pregnant with the second, you have a whole new set of concerns. But let's start with the birth. Let's face it, with my due date tomorrow, I could go into labour at any moment! Does that scare me? Absolutely not. But nor did it first time round either! My philosophy was that the baby HAS to come out, one way or another so the best way for me to handle it, was to be excited about it and imagine the best labour and birth possible! (If you are a student of The Law of Attraction, then you'll know where I'm coming from when I say visualisation plays a big part for me!!). Did all my Parentcraft and Antenatal class mates share my positive outlook? Definitely not. Many of them were already planning their "straight to epidural" strategy, whilst I had decided I wanted as little pain relief as possible. (Through sheer exhaustion, I did have to give in to pethidine after 14 hours of contractions with nothing much happening and I'll admit to a little bit of gas and air!)

Bring On the Pain
When it got close to my due date, I would be willing for pain to come. I guess it will be the only time in my life when I actually WANTED to be in pain. Why? Because for me, it meant I was very close to being able to hold my baby! This time round it is no different. Every niggle and twinge I get as I get closer and closer, I'm praying will turn into the real thing. In fact I was bitterly disappointed last Sunday evening, when after 3 hours of what appeared to be the start of some mild but regular-ish contractions, I started to doze off. I looked at the clock - 3.18am. 18 minutes since the last "contraction". Had I missed one? Where's the next one? Ian was already snoring again - bored with the timekeeping!! 3.24am. Still no sign! Then the next thing I know, it's 6am and Sophie is waking us up to make her a drink! False alarm! Those darned Braxton Hicks (or Branston Pickles as they are affectionately known now in our house!!).

Older Siblings?
SO what are my concerns this time round if it's not the labour and it's not the birth? Well, Sophie for one thing. At nearly 3 years old, it's difficult to know just how much she really understands about what's going to happen when baby comes out of mummy's tummy. Ask her whether she would like a little brother or a little sister and most days it's a little sister. Very occassionally she plumps for a little brother. Is she going to be disappointed? We opted not to find out what sex the baby is, so we can't tell her for sure what she's going to get. And will there be jealousy? (I know - Law of Attraction fans - focus on what you want, not what you don't want! - tip for first time mums!). We've bought her a wicked present "from baby" for when the time arrives. But I always remember my mum saying that when she brought me home from the hospital, my brother wouldn't even talk to her!

Is it Worth It?
After all this ladies, (and fella's - in particular birth partners that might be reading this!), one thing is for certain. Whatever happens on the day - pain, no pain, quick birth, slow labour, epidural, c-section - it is the most incredible feeling when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time and everything that's gone before, melts away into a distant memory!..... (well, until of course you have to go for your stitches but that's a whole other topic!!)

Enjoy the moment!
