Baby Cpr: A Life Saving Skill

By:

Babies fill our lives with happy moments and joy. Every parent out there will do anything they can for their baby. Do you know what to do in the event that your baby stops breathing or is choking? It is a very difficult situation to imagine and all parents hope that it will never happen to them. Knowing what steps to take in this situation can prevent further injury and even death. Keeping your CPR skills at a high level is the best way to prevent a situation from having a tragic end.

CPR stands for cardio pulmonary resuscitation. CPR is used to get oxygen and blood to all the main organs like the brain. The sooner you can perform the CPR routine, the better the result could be. Mere minutes are important when a heart stops beating.

Who would benefit from a baby CPR class? People who have interactions with babies on a daily basis should prepare themselves to take the appropriate action during an emergency. Some examples are parents, grand parents, the nanny, au pairs and older siblings.

Here are some scenarios where the knowledge of performing proper baby CPR could be of help:

Choking is a real risk for infants. Babies are curious and put everything in their mouths. Remember that any small thing a baby can put in his or her mouth is a potential choking hazard. Care must also been taken when the baby first starts eating solid food. They are not familiar with the texture and sometimes try to put too much food in their mouths. They also play and laugh while eating. Monitoring your child while they are eating and keeping small items out of their reach are good ways to prevent choking.

Drowning is another reason where you could save a life with baby CPR. Again babies are curious and they are unaware how dangerous water can be. Keep in mind that infants under the age of one year cannot be taught how to swim. Keep your baby close to hand when they are close to a body or water like pools, lakes and other potential drowning places. A baby could drown in as little as an inch of water in a matter of seconds.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, SIDS, is when a baby dies without a known cause of death. Things you can do to decrease the risk of SIDS are: Keeping cigarette smoke away from your baby is important.Put your bay to sleep lying on their back on a flat surface.Do not let them sleep with heavy blankets or stuffed toys.

Unfortunately your baby might still choke or stop breathing, even if you take all the precautions. By knowing what to do and being prepared is the best chance you can offer your baby. So if you have a baby in your life, or will in the near future, arm yourself with the knowledge to protect your littlest loved one. Encourage those around you to also learn these important life saving skills.
