Baa Atoll Discovering A Unesco World Biosphere Reserve In The Maldives

By:

From soft sandy beaches drenched in glorious coastal sunshine to crystal clear turquoise ocean waters, the Maldives offers a truly enchanting backdrop in which to enjoy a holiday in paradise. Made up of 26 atolls, the country has over 1,100 islands of which only around 200 are inhabited. Each atoll offers a unique holiday experience and this is none more so true than the countrys Baa Atoll.

Made up of the Fasduthere, Maalhosmadulu and Goifulhafehendhu atolls, Baa Atoll is home to 75 islands which include thirteen that are inhabited and five that have been set aside for resorts, while the remaining islands are uninhabited. Significantly the Baa Atoll was named as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2011 due to its rich biodiversity. Diverse coral reefs, marine life such as manta rays and whale sharks, benthic fauna and large mangroves that have become a roosting site for the frigate bird are among the many natural attractions that can be found here.

Those wanting to experience this rich biodiversity can visit Maalhosmadulu Atoll which is a part of Baa Atoll and that is home to the ring shaped reefs known as faroes. Bird lovers should make time to visit Olhugiri, an uninhabited island where one can find the Great Frigatebird. While Hawksbill and sea turtles can also be found on the island, there is a ban on catching them or taking their eggs as part of conservation measures.

Also worth visiting is Hanifaru Bay which offers sightings of whale sharks and large numbers of Manta rays in particular. One of the best places for diving, Hanifaru Bay, is an ideal spot to see these Manta rays who are drawn to the abundance of plankton in the area. At certain times Manta ray numbers can reach over two hundred and provide divers with a truly unique and awe inspiring sight.

Those looking to enjoy excursions in Maldives can stay at such luxury resorts as Baros Maldives which provides guests with elegant accommodation in an idyllic island setting. The property is also a premier diving resort Maldives and has the distinction of being home to the countrys first resort EcoDive Centre.
