Avoiding Used Car Scams

By:

Used car deals seem to be just about everywhere today. With so many outlets for used cheap cars, this section of the market has become a breeding ground for unscrupulous people looking to take advantage of unsuspecting buyers. By knowing what to look out for, you can protect yourself and your hard earned money from falling prey to a scam.

Be wary of offers that are "only good for today". This is quite possibly the most common trick of the trade. A dealer will use this tactic in an effort to get you to buy now, by scaring you into thinking you will lose out if you leave. In reality, if you are allowed time to go home and think about the deal, you may find it is not so great. The fact of the matter is, regardless of what you have been told, if you come back tomorrow, the dealer will still be more than happy to sell you the car.

What seems like a good deal upfront may not be so great in the long run. Salespeople often offer exceptional used car deals on the actual cost of the car, only to add on a ton of extra fees and gimmicks. Always refuse all extras since they only benefit the salesman and cost you money.

Remember that the salesperson will make a first offer that will be high. They do this as a means to get you to start your negotiation price low, and then meet in the middle at a price you can both live with.

Finally, keep in mind that not all sales are always advertised. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask for unadvertised promotions. These offers may not be promoted on a large scale because they cut the commission the salesperson will receive. However, asking for them could yield you a great savings.

Used car deals do not have to be difficult or result in a scam. By knowing this information upfront, you are armed with the knowledge necessary to drive away with a great deal. The car buying process is nothing more than a game, which can be easily won with a bit of preparation.
You should also be aware that used cheap cars are plentiful on the internet, but they are not always as good as they sound. If completing a transaction online, never wire money upfront, always see the car in person, and always have it inspected by a licensed and certified mechanic.
