Avoiding Burnout In Project Management

Avoiding Burnout In Project Management

By:

Avoiding burnout in any type of job can be increasingly difficult these days, with productivity increasing as employers are asking fewer employees to do more with less. There are likely very few workers anymore who feel that their jobs are safe and secure, which leads to additional hours being worked in order to maintain ones grip on ones current job. And continued layoffs mean that those who are left bear the burden of figuring out how to do not just their own jobs but everyone elses as well.

With all this in mind, how is the Project Manager supposed to position him or herself to avoid burnout? This is a profession in which the threat of burnout is real, because for most projects there are so many moving parts, different departments to work with, conflicting personalities, and tight deadlines. And its the job of the Project Manager to keep everything even-keeled and on track, in what often seems like an impossible proposition.

In order to start out on the right foot, a good Project Manager will make sure that everything is in place even before the project starts. This means that all the resources needed are available, that all team members are an appropriate fit for their roles, that management or leadership is on board with the project and that no additional buy-in is needed. A project will have a difficult time succeeding if the Project Manager needs to spend valuable time trying to get management to sign on and agree to the basic precepts of the work being done!

Once the Project Manager knows that all of the necessary pieces are in place, the next step is to make sure that a project plan is in place, one that everyone is apprised of and where everyone knows his or her role and responsibilities. Its the job of the Project Manager to make sure that the necessary work is being done well and on time, and NOT to do that work him or herself. Make sure that everyone on the team is on board with the work, and that there are frequent checkpoints built in to the plan, to ensure that everything is moving forward according to plan with effective leadership methods.

Another important thing to keep in mind in order to avoid burnout is to not be overly ambitious. Its great when a Project Manager wants to have overarching goals that go beyond whats in the project plan, but this is rarely successful, as projects have a way of going off-kilter, with unforeseen problems, and these will have to be dealt with as they come up. Its best to reign in these ambitions and just focus on doing a superlative job on the project at hand, and bringing it in on time, and under budget.
