Avoid Sore Fingers When Playing The Guitar

By:

Each of us will have a different experience along our guitar journey. Some of us may choose Jazz while others goes for Metal. We might choose Acoustic over Electric. Which ever route we take, one of the experiences we shall most likely all share sooner or later is that of sore finger tips.

Don't be fooled in to thinking that this only a temporary experience reserved only for the newbie players. In fact the experienced player can also revisit the road of painful tips again and again.

Is there a way around this junction in the road ahead? Yes and in this article I will share with you a few simple tips and techniques to reduce this rather annoying but common problem.

Sore finger tips usually occur when they are subjected to more demands than usual. This sounds obvious right? So why does almost every one suffer from it then? For the simple reason that they don't know the rules!

You will hear many ideas of how to either avoid sore fingers or how to speed up the 'toughening up' process. I was told to use surgical spirit by my first guitar teacher. I never did and didn't really suffer from sore tips either! Am I a Superhero? No but I did always want to be one when I grew up. I am still waiting!

The key is to keep steady progress in your playing patterns. In other words, keep yourself regular!

If you lay of playing, especially at the start of your journey and then go mad for an hour or two, expect sore tips and at the very worst, maybe even a blister. And if you are a seasoned player and you then introduce something new in to your playing such as more bending or higher bends, then again you can expect sore fingers.

So, like most things, the answer is very simple, (if it was complicated, everyone would understand it, right?) - to avoid sore fingers, keep regular, steady progressive playing.

Beginners - between 10 - 30 minutes a day plus breaks, 4 - 5 days a week. Seasoned players - at least 15 minutes up to 4 - 5 hours including breaks. 5 - 6 days a week.

It's also a wise idea to pace your sessions too - play for 2 - 5 minutes then take a minute break. Don't be too over analytical with the figures. This is about fun after all! Just make sure you pace yourself.
