It's really not difficult to understand why introducing a sales joke or two to your presentation can be good for business. After all, humour is known to break down barriers and make people happier. From a sales perspective introducing levity through well placed sales jokes can help you to establish better relationships with your customers and create a good impression. If you are willing to poke a little fun at yourself then chances are your customers will perceive you as self confident and sure of yourself.

Of course, like anything you don't want to take it too far. But using humour such as sales jokes can be a very good thing both for you and for business. Unfortunately, for many people using humour doesn't come easily. As a consequence they are unable or unwilling to introduce it to their repertoire of sales tools and techniques. Not to worry, you can learn how to add humour. With a little training and some homework you'll be a pro in no time at all.

There are a couple of rules that you need to keep in mind. First of all you want to be sure to avoid jokes that may be offensive. That includes topics such as religion, politics, race, sexual orientation, and other sensitive topics. You also want to steer clear of adult sales jokes. Even though you may find provocative sales jokes funny or amusing someone else may not. In fact, they may get you into trouble!

So once you know the type of material to avoid regardless of who your audience is you can think about your audience. You need to know your audience. Of course if you are sales person then you already do that. So all you need to do now is think about the audience in terms of the type of sales jokes that would work best with them.

Would sales meeting jokes be the best bet or should you try some sales training jokes? In any case, general jokes about sales will probably be a safe bet if they comply with the rules we have already mentioned.

You don't have to deliver your sales jokes as if you were a stand up comedian. There are other opportunities to introduce levity. Presentations for example offer a good opportunity to use cartoons or other visual sales jokes.

Advertising, print materials, your website and other support materials can offer good opportunities to add sales jokes as well. If you keep an eye open you'll quickly see that there are plenty of opportunities to add some good tasteful jokes about sales throughout the sales process.

Regardless of how you decide to introduce humour you are well on your way to lightening up and giving both yourself and your customers a smile and a laugh. In the long run not only might you find yourself a little happier you may even see your sales increase. Either of those things alone would be good enough but when combined, what could be better.

So get out there and start practicing your sales jokes.
