Automation Hand In Hand With Robotics

Computers and counting machines have been around for so long that no one can really say with 100% positive accuracy exactly how long. The Antikythera mechanism which was found in a ship wreck on the floor of the ocean is estimated to have been constructed around 100 BC. It was found in 1901 and wasn't fully understood until decades later. This is astonishing! Something that is so old yet highly accurate with astronomy and time could not be understood nearly 2000 years after it's creation! The device can accurately predict lunar eclipses. Although computers and technology have rapidly advanced our world today, humans have been using mechanics for a long time.

Now in the modern society, we have an abundance of technology. Much of which is so mechanical and requires such provisional programming that the average person could not come close to fully explaining how it works. Just as in 100 BC, I'm sure most of the people marveled at the Antikythera device with no knowledge of the mechanics behind it. This isn't to say that we can not learn how the guts of machinery works, however the majority of us wouldn't be able to explain how our cell phone works. We know there is a signal transmitting from the phone to a satellite, but what does that have to do with our voice traveling in real time to the other person's ear? Even the battery in the phone is too complex for the average person to simply 'know' how it works. Which brings us to a crossroads in society as technology advances far beyond the typical know how of an average Joe. On one side are the masterminds behind automation systems and the other side is the worker in a shop who presses a button all day. This is a new complication in society that I feel safe in saying, humans have never experienced. Jobs are being lost to the machines we are building, creating part of the problem with our economy.

Automation systems provide companies with efficiency and reliability. Though they are quite expensive, in some industries it is a fundamental requirement. However, when there is an over abundance of machinery taking the jobs of working men it creates a problem. Less people at work equals less money being spent all across the board. A family can no longer go out to eat as often, or take the vacation to Disneyland, or buy the latest fashions for their kids. It is not to say that every persons job is at risk of being replaced by a machine, generally outsourcing to another country is a bigger issue. However, instead of paying a thousand people in India for example, to take customer calls day and night, there is a machine that can send you through a process of selecting various options to assist you. We all know how annoying these automated calls are "Press one for Enlgish, two for Spanish". To a company however, this is saving a lot of money.

The next target for automation products would be fast food chains. It's practically set up for robotics to step right in. Now, this is only my prediction and is not based on a solid foundation of expertise predictions or economical proof. I am simply making an observation. In these times where so many American citizens are rendered jobless with children, seeking government help it seems no one is asking where the jobs went? If the low wage jobs of McDonalds and fast foods joints are lost to robots, things will become ugly very fast. In many fields like medical and military, robotics have done wonders, practically miracles. However in the working man's side, not so much. The future is approaching and technology is evolving at a faster rate than humans are.
