Automation And Outsourcing

Automation And Outsourcing

By:

All over the world, businesses are leveraging the opportunities provided by automation. Increasingly smart machines are helping businesses with all types of tasks, and in doing so offer the promise of greatly enhanced productivity, efficiency and hence profit. But these new technologies are not without difficulty, and businesses often find themselves in one or both of two situations:

Technical Failure Causes Service Failure There is no doubt that new technologies have revolutionized business and that there is a new generation of technically savvy, often young, employees who can leverage these opportunities. However, what happens when these technologies fail, what happens when there is a temporary hitch? Too many businesses find that this new generation of technically minded individuals are dumbfounded when the technology fails - perhaps you have encountered an airport check in desk where members of the staff has been confounded by the failure of the computerized check in system. Maybe you have experienced delays of a similar nature at the check out line at your local supermarket.

A Lack of Trust Causes Service Failure On the other side of this particular coin, many businesses find that there is a different generation of less technically inclined, often more mature, employees who are reluctant to engage with these new technologies. This group of employees can present limitations on leveraging the power of technology effectively, as they do not trust the machinery to do the job properly, they believe in manual interaction.

This can have an immensely restrictive effect on the progress of a business, as they may be slower to pursue opportunities and lose competitive advantage to their opponents who use leverage to maximize the effectiveness of their resources. More importantly, failure to improve the capacity of your business to efficiently serve the customer can have a devastating financial impact upon your business. Technology enhances your flexibility and commercial poise.

So, how do you bridge the two poles of the technology and the non-technical workforce? It is almost certain that most businesses have both types of employees in their organization, so it is really a question of bringing the two sides together.

The most important factor is balance in you business operations. Your business must not rely too much on technology, or ignore it completely. Successful businesses leverage technology only where it makes a clear improvement to their bottom line, and do not simply use technology for technologies sake.

Getting the technology of your business right is not easy. It must be monitored closely and pragmatically used to provide better solutions for the workforce. If a technological side of your business is not making a clear contribution to your profits, then act decisively and either outsource the function to a third party, or cut the technology out altogether. This sort of technological pruning is a very healthy part of the development of any successful business.

Leveraging the power of technology can have a hugely powerful effect on your business, but it is important that you have the workforce to cope with this effectively. Navigating these two poles is crucial for building a successful business, with an enduring legacy and lifestyle that makes owning your business a pleasure.
