Autism Treatment Stopping Biomedical Treatments And Autism

By:

In regards to starting and stopping biomedical therapies, I would like to talk about that for a little bit. I often am asked the question “If my child is taking B12, or my child is on Diflucan or my child is on Nystatin, or my child is taking various supplements, can I stop these therapies at once or should I be weaning them off of these things?”. My answer, I believe, applies to many of the biomedical therapies that are used and if you are not seeing any further improvements or the initial benefits you saw when you first started a therapy, you could be hitting a plateau. At that point, and certainly you would want to check with your own doctor on this as well, it is my experience that stopping these therapies would not result in any ill effects.

While there are certainly medications where weaning off is appropriate, for instance the case of steroid medications, anti-depressant medications and many other medications for psychiatric issues. You would need to lower the dose slowly and not just stop them all at once. But for many biomedical therapies like anti-fungal treatments, most supplements and things like B12, there is no need to wean your child from them. In my experience, you can just stop those therapies when you feel there is no longer any benefit, of course consultation with your physician would be warranted first. Many people ask about B12 therapy and whether that can be stopped suddenly. And my feeling is that if that therapy needs to be stopped, you certainly can so do at once and then if you decide to restart it later you can do so.

And this is true for the majority of the treatments we use in the biomedical Autism community. Generally speaking we are not going to see dangerous reactions, we are not putting these children on very stressful medications or even medications that are highly toxic. And there certainly are medications that would warrant a weaning off rather than an abrupt stopping. And I would like to stress that this is still an issue to cover with your own physician especially if you ever have any question about this. But many of the common things that we put these children on such as nutritional supplements, anti-fungals, etc. can be stopped whenever they need to be stopped, without needing to wean the child off of them.
