Autism Treatment Respen-a, Essential Fatty Acids And Autism

By:

I have been asked quite often when kids go on Respen-A about the other supplement recommendations. And for the biomedical Autism community, this too has created controversy. And there will always be people who question any new therapy as to whether or not it is healthy. And this happens when any new information or therapy is introduced, questions are asked and they need answers. That is something I have no problem with.

At the beginning when I first began using Respen-A, the main supplement suggestion was to remove essential fatty acid supplements such as fish oil, cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil, etc. I had a real problem with this initially given that I have observed many children finding benefit from supplementing with essential fatty acids. Often times you have children with very self limiting diets when they have Autism and they may not get enough nutrients. Essential fatty acid supplements can be very helpful for many kids on the Autism spectrum.

For children with Autism who have visual issue and visual stimulation problems, cod liver oil can be very helpful. I have had patients in my practice where their visual stims reduce or even diminish completely with cod liver oil supplements. So at first when I started using Respen-A, I did not remove the fish oil from these kids’ supplements. Some children did fine, some of the parents decided to remove fish oils on their own but my feeling was that we can just leave it alone and if we need to change it later, we could. I began to see situations where certain children were not seeing the early benefits that I hoped they would. So then I changed my approach and began recommending a removal of essential fatty acids with the use of Respen-A, then we can gauge the progress and always add back in the essential fatty acids if we want to.

I do recognize a different in the ways in which Respen-A works when a child is supplemented with essential fatty acids and when they are not. Very often Respen-A appears more effective in a child who is not taking essential fatty acids than in a child who is, but that doesn’t mean that it will not work at all if you are taking them. And the suggested time frame is to remove essential fatty acids about three weeks prior to beginning Respen-A. And I have had some children add essential fatty acids back in after being on Respen-A for a couple of months and they have not seen a drop in gains. But like anything else, no two children are the same or will react the same way. We will talk more about this issue in part 2.
