Autism Treatment Mao-a Activity, And Its Benefits As An Autism Treatment, Part 1 Of 2

By:

I want to cover MAO-A activity in 2 parts through these videos, with this being part 1. But, first as a clarification, I want to say quickly that I believe that I did misspeak when it came to the name of the journal. The journal which was published in 1957 was called The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease and the author was Dr. Lehman and others. This study showed improvements of individuals with Autism in the areas of increase communication, better eye contact, better socialization and a reduction in self stimulatory behaviors. The dosage of Reserpine used on these individuals with Autism were between 3 and 7 mg and if you’d like to look this study up, you can find it in the 1957 issue of The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease by Dr. Lehman.

And now I would like to talk a little bit about the ways in which Reserpine works. The first thing to be aware of is an enzyme called MAO-A which stands for Monoamine Oxidase A. This enzyme is instrumental in metabolizing three primary neurotransmitters, serotonin, nor epinephrine and histamine and MAO-A is found inside cells. And Reserpine serves as an MAO-A agonist. The misconception by many people seems to be that they believe the Respen-A will deplete MAO-A or inhibit MAO-A activity. But that would happen by using an MAO-A inhibitor and Respen-A is not an MAO-A inhibitor, and neither is Reserpine. Now some medications out do inhibit MAO-A activity and very often they are used to treat depression, but Reserpine is not one of those. Reserpine functions through the augmentation of the enzyme capacity, or metabolic capacity, of MAO-A.

And in doing that, serotonin is turned over into something that is known as its active aldehyde form. 5 hydroxyindole acetaldehyde is what the active aldehyde form is called and that then complexes the post synaptic receptor to produce the physiological effect on the post synaptic neuron. You can still end up with serotonin depletion over time by using high doses of Reserpine, or by even using the low dose Respen-A. That is why adequate protein intake in important to continue to replenish serotonin.
