Austrian Ski Resorts

By:

Austria may not be as glamorous as Switzerland or as popular as France, but for sheer authenticity the ski resorts of Austria are hard to beat. Skiing is the national sport, meaning the locals are very connected with skiing, and as such Austrian ski resorts are some of the best in the world.

What the Austrians are also famous for is for having a devastatingly excellent apres ski scene (with emphasis on devastatingly). Expect rivers of beer, wine and schnaps, dancing on the tables in ski boots to the sound of traditional oom-pah bands and Euro-pop. Its hard to beat Austrian hospitality, and their ski resorts are no different.

Austria may not feature the highest slopes in the Alps, but where it really differs from its Alpine neighbours is that you will not find any space age type ultra-modern ski resorts in Austria. Everywhere still displays a traditional Alpine charm, despite every ski resort featuring at least a 3 star hotel (helped by government subsidies) so there is certainly no lack of modern comforts.

The famous Austrian hospitality is however matched by a famously carnivorous diet. As friendly as the locals will be to you, the prospect of vegetarianism is very often met by incomprehension as they pile your plate up with more pork and veal.

Unsuitability for vegetarians aside, Austrian ski resorts provide the setting for some of the best ski holidays you can imagine. Mayrhofen for one is particularly renowned for a party atmosphere, and even hosts a music festival during April offering world class headlines acts against a backdrop of snow peaks.

Kitzbuhel is another absolute gem of a ski resort. Although playing host to some great skiing, Kitzbuhel is one of those rare ski resorts that has enough going for it to warrant a trip from non-skiers. With some amazing restaurants, and a beautiful medieval village along with plenty of unique activities (ever been to an Alpine zoo?) Kitzbuhel more than justifies a trip, even without any skis.

And that really is what Austrian ski resorts have over most other (especially Alpine) ski resorts. They are wonderful destinations in their own right. With the famous Austrian hospitality, and the beautiful medieval villages set against unspoilt mountain ranges, you dont need to ski to enjoy a holiday in an Austrian ski resort. And if you do, well, there are some great slopes to ski down too.
