The regions have cool climate and the topography of the areas, soil, climate and other factors also suit this industry. Branded and famous wines are labelled on the basis of their grape varieties and the same make for most of the domestic wine production. Some of the lesser known brands make for the cheap wine.

Even within these regions, the concentration of the grapes producing regions is in the river valleys. The closeness to the rivers provides the required moisture content in the atmosphere for the growth of grapes. Hunter valley in New South Wales, Yarra valley in Victoria, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley in South Australia, Coonawarra in South Australia, Margarate valley in Western Australia, Pipers river valley in Tasmaniaand some other regions have been producing the wine grade grapes. Some of these regions have a centuries old tradition while others are the recent ones to join the club.
