Australias Work Policies Needs Upgrading

By:

With Australias resource boom seems set to continue its dramatic growth, the federal government is currently under pressure from the business sector to increase the number of skilled migrants allowed into the country as the demand for skilled labor has far outstrip local workforce supply.
As the increased demand for skilled workers is strained and with the depleted local labor supply triggering the re-emergence of skills shortage, business owners are forcing the government to look offshore to fill skills shortage.
Likewise, the local Australian workers shifting to higher-paid jobs in the resource-rich mining states have caused a need for workers to fill up these newly vacated lower-paid jobs.
With these chains of spiraling effects of Australias booming resource industry triggering an increase in job opportunities, many overseas skilled workers have entered Australia, either legally, via applying for any of the working visa for Australia such as the Temporary Business (Long Stay) 457 Visa, the Working Holiday Australia visa, or any of the skilled work visa in Australia. Others also enter and stay initially in Australia via an Australian visa tourist and then overstay.
Meanwhile, other overseas workers enter Australia illegally, through overstaying on their working tourist visa Australia or by means of an illegal route.
Though workers who entered Australia legally have a great chance of holding a highpaying job and can greatly contribute to Australias economy, illegal workers, on the other hand, are at the mercy of unscrupulous employers who may force them to accept substandard wages, excessive hours, or dangerous working conditions. Though these illegal workers also contribute to Australias economy, they also undermined the governments revenue for they do not pay taxes as well as usurped jobs that are supposed to be filled by legal workers.
As tougher reforms on Australias migration policies have made it difficult to gain entry to the country, many workers are forced to enter Australia illegally.
In order to resolve this escalating problem of the increasing number of illegal migrants staying in the country, the Australian government had introduced labor law amendments that tackle the problem from the demand side by penalizing those who employ anyone who is in the country illegally. However, employer interests have placed pressure on the provisions of the act, causing them to weaken before it became law.
Now, the weakened provisions have been reviewed and was discovered that these provisions does not really worked and should be improved or upgraded.
The proposed upgrading would re-establish a more stringent liability for employers who are found and convicted of hiring illegal immigrants. So, in order for employers to avoid being penalized, they should check and ensure that those they employ have the proper legal documentations that would enable them to work legally in Australia.
This step should be done by employers regularly in order to stop illegal workers usurping the jobs intended for visitors and migrants who are already in the country legitimately on work visa in Australiaand other visas who are forced to do menial jobs. Likewise, doing proper documentation check could boost the number of skilled visa applicants, as more jobs will be available to them if these visa over-stayers are stopped.
