Austin's Westlake High School Included In Newsweek's Top 100 High Schools List

Austin residents have long been proud of the strength of the area schools, but it is always nice to receive confirmation that the schools must be doing something right. Therefore, residents of the Eanes Independent School District had much to celebrate when Dr. Nola Wellman, who is the superintendant of the school system, recently announced that Westlake High School achieved the number 58 position in Newsweek magazine's annual list of the "Top 100 High Schools."

Westlake High School, which is the only high school in the Eanes Independent School District, currently holds an exemplary rating. Still, like many schools around the country, Westlake is facing some challenges. For example, the school continues to look for new strategies for improving Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test scores even further. In addition, the school is continually searching for ways to expand and to evolve with the growing population while remaining competitive within these difficult economic times.

Although Austin and the state of Texas as a whole has fared far better than other cities around the country in terms of its economy, obtaining and maintaining the funds necessary to continually improve its schools remains a common concern. One topic that has been of major concern is the current bond proposal, which parents throughout the district are watching with an anxious eye to see if and how the proposed package will materialize.

So, while it is true that the Westlake High School board has many difficult decisions to make, Austin residents can take comfort in knowing that the district has a strong history of making the right choices and moving the district and its schools in the right direction. For most parents and students within the district, Westlake High School has proven itself to be a model school time and time again. To have this assertion confirmed by Newsweek's list is just icing on the cake.
