Austin Ranks Second In College Destination Metro Areas

By:

Throughout the country, colleges and universities have found that people are expressing a renewed interest in heading back to school. With many people losing their jobs due to the recession and with President Obama offering many incentives to those who return to the classroom, there has never been a better time to head back to school and to start preparing for a new career. But, where exactly should people go if they are interested in heading back to school? According to the American Institute for Economic Research, Austin is one of the top places to consider.

When determining the best destinations for college-bound individuals, the American Institute for Economic Research took a closer look at the quality of life that students could expect from their off-campus activities. This included examining things such as:

*Opportunities to participate in internships
*The general lifestyle of the city
*Availability of cultural activities
*Unemployment rate
*Professional opportunities

In all, researchers considered more than 360 different metro areas and created a list of the top 75 destinations according to size, with Austin coming in second place among the midsize metro areas with populations of between 1 million and 2.5 million. The complete top 5 list for this category is as follows:

*San Jose, California
*Austin, Texas
*Hartford, Connecticut
*Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
*Denver, Colorado

Among major metro areas with populations of 2.5 million or more, the top 5 list was:

*New York, New York
*San Francisco, California
*Boston, Massachusetts
*Washington, D.C.
*Seattle, Washington

The top five small metro areas with populations between 250,000 and 1 million were:

*Boulder, Colorado
*Bridgeport, Connecticut
*Ann Arbor, Michigan
*Gainesville, Florida
*Madison, Wisconsin

College towns with populations of less than 250,000 were ranked as follows:

*Ithaca, New York
*State College, Pennsylvania
*Ames, Iowa
*Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
*Iowa City, Iowa

Clearly the city of Austin is in good company with the above list. Austin continues to be a most desirable location for students. The city's music scene, nightlife, lakes and parks are a perfect match with multiple universities in the area.
