Austin Named 10th Best City For Young Professionals

By:

The city of Austin has received numerous awards and accolades over the last several years. In fact, the capital city has been at the top of many lists regarding the best places to live and to start a business as well as being selected as one of the cities that is most likely to bounce back first from the recession. According to a recent Austin Biz Journals article, the city can add one more recognition to its long list, as Forbes website has listed Austin as the 10th best city for young professionals.

In order to be included on the latest Forbes list, cities had to have populations of more than 1 million people. Factors that were then taken into consideration included:

*Unemployment rate
*Average wage
*Affordability
*Public company presence

In addition to considering these factors, the publication also considered how many graduates from the class of 2000 at major universities lived in the city. Universities included in the study were Duke University, Harvard University, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Rice University and Stanford University. By looking at where these graduates chose to live, the publication hoped to gain a better idea of where recent college graduates have decided to start their high-powered careers.

Austin wasn't the only Texas city to be included on the list. In fact, the state of Texas dominated the list with three of its cities making it into the top ten. Houston, which took the number one position, was recognized for its "business-friendly environment and abundance of oil money." Considering that Houston is home to 14 of the largest companies in the country, this doesn't come as too much of a surprise. In fact, only New York, which came in fourth on the list, is home to more large companies than Houston.

Dallas, which came in the number six position, was also included on the list, but Austin was included primarily for its companies presence and its low unemployment rate, which is currently sitting at 6.9%. The other cities included in the top ten of the list were Washington D.C. at number two, followed by Minneapolis-St. Paul in the number three position, Boston at number five, Seattle at number seven, Denver at number eight and Atlanta at number nine.
