Austin Earns Unofficial Name Of "keep Austin Weird" For Many Reasons

By:

Although Austin's official nickname is "The Live Music Capital of the World," its unofficial name has long been "Keep Austin Weird." Still, it is important to note that the city is not "weird" just for the sake of being different. Rather, the residents of the capital city have long pushed against the growth of chain retailers and mass-market companies. In fact, the company is a virtual sea of independently owned restaurants and stores, with the only "big box" retailer in the downtown area being the eco-friendly Whole Foods Market, and they are headquartered in Austin.

It's not just about bucking commercial operations, however, as the music and arts scene is also quite vibrant in the capital city. Furthermore, thanks to its active triathlon community, cycling opportunities and other opportunities for fitness, Austin is the fittest city in the State of Texas. Yet, while the city has managed to preserve the beauty of the surrounding Texas Hill country, it has still undergone a significant amount of growth over the last several years.

"The skyline has changed dramatically," said Will Wynn, who is the former Mayor of the city. Virtually every high-rise you can see, which is a lot, is brand-new, and almost all are residential. Ten years ago, there was one apartment building, and just 250 people lived in the downtown core. Now it is 13,000, and my goal is 25,000 by 2014."

With the 56-story Austonian, which is the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi, opening in June, the skyline has changed even more this year.
In all, those who are interested in calling the capital city home have three primary neighborhoods to live in. These include:

*Downtown - popular with second-home buyers due to the hotel-style amenities and new buildings located within walking distance of the popular Sixth Street entertainment district
*SoCo - refers to Austin's South Congress as well as the area encompassed by South Lamar and South First streets. The area is home to numerous barbecue and Tex-Mex restaurants as well as music stores and vintage shops. Young people, athletes and artists tend to call this area, which features modest homes ranging in price from $400,000 to $1 million, home
*Lake Travis - lakefront homes, which can range from $300,000 to $1.2 million, are located around this large lake, which is located just outside of the city
