The Aeolian Islands is an archipelago of seven islands- Filicudi, Alicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Vulcano and Stromboli. Each island has its own attractions that you can enjoy without blowing a hole in your pocket.

Lipari is a UNESCO heritage site. There is no volcano on this island but the heat generated by the laval underground has led to creation of many hot springs. As is the case with all other islands, there are numerous vantage points from where you can get breathtaking view of the sea and the other islands. The coast line of your island is not developed and makes for great treks. Be prepared to walk around a lot when you visit the Aeolian Islands.

Vulcano, as the name suggests, has a live volcano on the island. This may sound like a very cool thing but the smell of sulphur can be overpowering. Stromboli is the second island on the Aeolian Islands that contains a volcano. Salina hosts the tallest peak in the archipelago. As long as you are in good shape and have the necessary equipment, you can always try and climb this peak. This island is also famous for its black sand beach. Make sure you capture a few snaps to convince your friends that such a thing actually exists.

Panarea is often considered as out of bounds for the budget traveler. This is because it is the trendiest, coolest and most fashionable island amongst all other Aeolian islands. The hotels are expensive and luxurious. The food is expensive and delicious and the setting and the ambience is designed to cater to the crme de la crme of society. However, do not give this island a skip. For starters, you can gawp at the hotels and the luxury that seems to offer the best service in the world.

The other islands too have their charms and attractions but you can enjoy all this only if you are in a position to get the best accommodation around. Do you want to stay at same place where Bergmen stayed during the making of Stromboli? Or would you rather live in a place that reminds you of your own?

It is best to search and book in advance to reduce costs. Taking the trip during the off peak season too is an idea. However, the islands end up being accessible by boat only when autumn and winter is in full swing. However, you will definitely save a tidy sum on inexpensive accommodation.
