In ancient times, courtship was a matter of capture rather than honourable behaviour and heroic gestures, when men raided other villages in search of wives if there was a shortage of suitable women in their own. Some historians believe the wedding ring is symbolic of the shackles that these captured brides had to wear.
Medieval times saw the beginning of chivalry, where suitors bestowed flowery poetry and verse upon their starry eyed young women. Chastity and honour were the order of the day.

Love without marriage and the laws that govern it! Tradition went out of the window and so did all of the shackles and chains of courtship.
