At What Age Is The Right Time For Kids To Have A Phone?

It seems like everyone has a personal phone. Anyone from those just walking to those older folks being wheeled around in chairs have their own cellular or sat phone. Many parents wonder at what point is it OK for their kids to get a phone. The thing that has to be considered though is what these phones will be used for.

Most kids will say that every person they see has a phone. If your son or daughter is a pre-teenager or is in elementary or middle school, many of their peers likely do have phones. The trend of more students having phones at school continues to rise. However, many schools restrict phone use and even the simple possession of a phone, even if it's turned off.

So why exactly are kids eager to get a phone? In all likelihood, their parents have a home phone that can be used to call other friends or family. Although a home landline can be very useful, it certainly doesn't come close to matching the features of a satellite phone or a cell phone. But cell phones are likely a more practical options because satellite phones tend to cost a lot more money to use them.

One reason why kids want a cell phone is to play games and to get on the web. A lot of cells make it super simple to take a photo and then upload it to one of the many social networking sites. It is true that kids are not even officially old enough to use most of these sites, but that does not stop anyone that wants to get an account. You have to ask yourself if you really want your child to be able to jump online and do whatever they want to, at any time.

You might wonder, is playing games and taking photos a good reason for a kid to get a phone? If they have no reason to be calling people from their phone because of the availability of a land line then why not get them a handheld game system instead? A game can be checked out by parents beforehand to see if it is appropriate. There are plenty to choose from, and kids love them.

In split families where a child is at the mother's house one time and then the father's house another, a phone could come in handy under these circumstances. Since the two parents may not be communicating, the child could benefit from having their own cell phone to talk to each parent. But like anything with a child, you have to weigh the pros and cons of it, especially when it comes to keeping your child safe.
