Assessment Tools Open New Vocational Opportunities

By:

Many of the most successful people we know of were fortunate to know what careers they wanted to pursue from young ages. They had the vision and focus to work toward their specific goals without detour to enable them to achieve great success in their fields at young ages. Their strong subject interests matched their aptitudes and personalities to blend together the ingredients needed for that perfect recipe of accomplishment and excellence.

The fact is that this type of person is rare. Few have that degree of dedication and focus towards a singular goal that early in life. Few of us know ourselves so well and so long before we've experienced more of the world and our places in it. Yet, we're asked to make such life-determining decisions upon high school graduation in our teenage years. It is expected that we will choose a career path at that point with significant pressure on us to do so even though for many, world and life experience has been quite limited to that point. There are hundreds of potential career options that we have never heard of or been exposed to.

Further education is an essential in today's world with manufacturing and blue-collar jobs that were once available at wages that could support a family, now essentially non-existent in the United States. A university degree or trade school certification is a mandatory beginning in order to build a career. This further education is also quite costly today. Even state universities now cost many thousands of dollars per semester. The cost can be well worth the rewards upon graduation, but much expense and time is wasted if the major is changed along the way or a student drops out.

One of the most common reasons that students change college majors mid-stream or drop out to pursue some other vocational avenue is because they are unaware of the many vocational opportunities available to them. Many choose majors based on what others might expect of them or choose a something that may have interested them on TV without taking into account their own aptitude and personality and how it may, or may not, be suitable in such a career.

Deciding on a career is easier when the tools are made available to provide information about vocational opportunities as well as information about the interests, talents, and personality traits that those who are successful in those vocations share. Combined with self-assessment tools, it can provide invaluable information to help make the right choice.
