Assessing Your Health Insurance Policy At Enrollment Time

By:

It's enrollment time again and when you look at your new insurance policy it may look similar to the one from this past year but looks can be deceiving and most people will find that there are significant changes in their insurance policy upon taking a closer look. Some of these changes may be hidden in your policy documents and one of the best ways to catch them is by holding up the new policy next to your existing policy as this will give you the best overview of the changes that have occurred.

Begin by looking at the co-pay and deductible. You will probably find that these amounts have gone up but if they haven't take a closer look because many insurance plans are going from a co-pay to coinsurance amount which essentially could wind up costing you quite a bit of money in the long run. Since a co-pay is a fixed amount but co-insurance is a percentage over time this could mean that you will be paying more out of pocket.

By now, the lifetime maximum benefit amount should be eliminated from any policy and this will equate to substantial savings for extremely ill or long term patients. While the extensions applicable to these changes still allows insurance companies some time to hold onto this policy clause, it will eventually be totally done away with in every policy by every company, it is on it's way to being extinct.

Other places you may find policy changes may be on the emergency benefits of your policy. Emergency room coverage is something that varies a lot from policy to policy so that the best way to see the changes is to look at your previous policy. Many insurance policies have a mandatory pre-authorization or a high co-pay so you may find that this amount has risen or that there are less benefits associated with emergency visits. For the most part, however, if you wind up admitted from an emergency room visit the co-pay will usually be waived.

Ultimately if you are in the policy of enrolling for your health insurance then you need to know where to look to find out exactly what is changing in your insurance policy. These changes can really impact you financially so if your benefits are changing you may need to set aside some additional funds to cover the higher out of pocket expenses that you will incur in the coming year.
