Asian Inspired Modest Bridesmaid Dress: The Qipao

By:

There are many reasons why before conducting a wedding precession you would want to have the bridesmaids to dress fairly modest during ceremony. One of the main reasons is its out of respect for the bridesmaids. Not every woman has a body, or is comfortable with their body enough to want to flaunt it in a formal event such as a wedding. So choosing a modest dress for your bridesmaids is not necessarily selling out style for respect. Beauty and style can be maintained while being modest.

Style is not put on the wayside when selecting a modest dress. In fact, style is paramount in using modest dresses because typically more fabric and more of an area of body is covered, thereby needing more design styling to make the dress that more elegant.

You can look to such designs in Asia for styles that are both modest and beautiful. Take, for instance, the Chinese Qipao dress. It is a dress that has a very vintage yet still maintains a trendy look and can be made to be modest as well as stunningly elegant.

It is a dress design that started several hundred years ago in mainland China. It was typically used as average daily attire for woman. At that time is was quite large and bulky, made for rugged daily chores and tasks. Legend has it that a beautiful pheasant woman who wore the original woman's gown found that doing work was much too difficult with the restraints the old dress style had.

She was clever enough to design a style that was slitted to allow better movement. Soon after in the mid-twentieth century the dress was tailored to be more flattering to the figure and became very fashionable.

The basic look usually is a high collar that is a little loose in the chest and is fitting in the waist. The dress is found short to the knees or long and flowing on the ground. The collar is the most remarkable aspect. The modest Qipao dress usually has a somewhat high collar and long sleeves.

The dress sometimes has a cross fold on the front, or even Chinese style fasteners that go across the chest or on the side of the torso. The versatility is boundless and not only is it used for bridesmaids but can be just as easily used for brides simply by adjusting the color, length and sleeves.

Do not think of this dress as odd or way out in left field. The dress has made heads turn at runways, red carpet affairs and has adorned stars and starlets in Asia and Hollywood throughout the turn of the century. Because this dress can be altered in so many ways, dress designers can cut a Qipao to match almost any wedding theme.
