Article Marketing Tip: Make Writing Easier By Doing A Writing Warm-up

By:

Have you ever noticed that the hardest part of writing an article is getting started? There are a few reasons why it is such a struggle to start to write.

* You expect a lot of yourself. You think you need to come up with genius ideas and write things perfectly, and that makes you freeze up. It's important that your article contains useful information, and it's very desirable to have the final free reprint article look professional, but focusing so much on the end result before you even start can sometimes cause you to dread starting.

* Your brain is not in writing mode yet. Writing is a skill that requires certain mental muscles, and just as a runner needs to stretch before trying to jump a hurdle, so writers need to stretch or warm-up before trying to write articles.

Here's a helpful article marketing tip--get in the habit of doing a writing warm-up. Here's a writing exercise you can do to get yourself warmed up:

1 - Position yourself at your computer or sit down with a pencil and paper.

2 - Set a timer for somewhere between three and five minutes. Be sure that the timer you're using is not a ticking one though, as that can be distracting.

3 - Just start writing. You can write about anything in the world that you want. It does not have to make sense or be well-written or perfectly spelled. You have permission to make mistakes in this writing warm-up that you're doing.

Also, there is no pressure to come up with anything mind blowing--it can be boring and simple. Just write about whatever pops into your head.

4 - Write for the prescribed amount of time, and do not try to edit or correct your writing in any way.

5 - Perfectionists may find it necessary to close their eyes while typing or writing in order to let the mistakes alone. You can also do this exercise blind folded if that helps.

6 - How can you keep typing for that amount of time? Three to five minutes doesn't seem very long, but it can be if you are supposed to be typing non-stop. It's easy to get frozen and stop, so here are some pointers for you:

*If your brain gets stalled and you can't think of anything to write, just type the last word(s) you typed repeatedly until you can get going again.

*If you're drawing a blank all of a sudden, just start hitting random keys--it's not important that what you're writing makes sense, but it is important that you are writing something and that you don't get too bogged down in analyzing what you're writing. Remember, this is your warm-up, and no one will be seeing this.

*If you've hit a speed bump in the thinking department, you can also just type whatever words come into your mind even if they don't make any sense.

7 - When you're first getting started, write things that encourage you to relax and turn your inner editor off. For example:

"I don't have to write anything major. I'm having trouble thinking of what to write but that's okay..."

8 - Start out small, and then you can increase your time if you like, going up to 20 minutes.

9 - Repeat daily or at least a few times a week.

This will keep your mind limber and loosen you up so that when you really are ready to write an article, you will be more loose, more flowing in your thinking, and more relaxed. You will be amazed at how such a simple exercise can impact your writing.
