Many people don't realise how important the sense of smell is, it's the only sense that delivers the information that it receives directly to the brain. This is the reason that aromatherapy oils work well to relax people; they use extracted natural essential oils which, when inhaled, have an effect on the mood, emotion and physical body of a person. When you smell something baking, you usually begin to salivate, aromatherapy oils work in the same way.

The use of aromatherapy oils goes back as far as ancient Egypt, if not earlier; they are used widely for massage and bath oils, in candles, shampoo, room and body sprays and skin care products. The major benefits of aromatherapy oils include balancing emotions, regulating irregular blood pressure levels, revitalizing a tired mind, reducing anxiety and stress and boosting the immune system. Newly constructed synthetic oils have been shown to not have the same benefits as natural oils.

The most well known oil to aid relaxation is lavender, yet few people realise that it can have different effects depending on what you mix the lavender oil with. In order to be calm and relaxed you should mix lavender with Clary sage and cedar wood, or if you want to be calm and focused mix the lavender with lemongrass and patchouli. Around the times of important exams, mix lavender oil with chamomile and this will relieve stress and anxiety.

Peppermint and eucalyptus oils have been shown to be mentally stimulating so it's recommended that you use these oils when you have a big business meeting or something important that requires you to be alert coming up. Similarly, if you are tired or feel over worked, use lemon and rosemary essential oils to revitalize your body. Mixing the oils you need with an unscented lotion or body cream works well as a moisturiser and will be sure to have the desired effect, or if you need a little top up of the oils, then mix them in a spray bottle with some water and spray around your car or room.

While many people are now in favour of chemically constructed oils in the forms of tablets, as they feel more certain that they work because a company has produce them, nothing works better than natural aromatherapy oils. They avoid you having to pump your body full of toxins and have been proven to work for thousands of years.
