Are You Treating Your Acne In The Most Effective Way Possible?

By:

Weve all been down the skin care aisle at our local drugstore, and weve all seen the countless products on the shelf that promise to reduce or totally eliminate your acne. Of course, if youre like most acne sufferers, you have probably tried most of those so-called miracle products to little or no avail. Why is this, exactly? Most likely because you are using the wrong product for your particular kind of acne. It is also possible that you are using too many products at one time. One of the biggest tricks of effectively treating stubborn acne is simply to find the product (or combination of products) that work for you. While this can involve frustrating trial and error, the end result can be well worth it.
Some tricks to remember when facing down that wall of acne medication is that different active ingredients work better for different types of acne. For example, if your breakouts consist primarily of blackheads and whiteheads, you will probably see the best results from a product containing salicylic acid. However, if your acne tends to consist mostly of red, inflamed pimples, your best bet for effective treatment is probably benzoyl peroxide. It is important to read labels carefully when choosing an acne treatment, and to choose products containing the lowest concentration of active ingredients possible. This is because the active ingredients in the majority of acne medications can cause dryness and irritation, and dryness and irritation can in turn contribute to acne. It can be a vicious cycle, and for that reason it is important not to over medicate, regardless of the temptation.
Since no single treatment is 100% effective for all who use it, you may have to try a couple different products before you find something that works for you. However, if you feel as though you are getting no measurable relief from OTC products, you may want to consider consulting a dermatologist. Just remember that any acne medication that is only available by prescription is probably going to have a long list of potential side effects. It is very important that you understand the risks of any medication that you are prescribed, and to weigh those potential risks against the potential benefits before beginning a prescription acne-treatment regimen.
The bottom line is that you do not have to suffer from embarrassing acne. There are treatments that work; it is simply a matter of finding the treatment that works best for you.
