Are You Thinking About Cabinet Refacing?

By:

Cabinet refacing is a relatively inexpensive way to make an old kitchen look new again. Many people try to do the job on their own, but there are a few aspects of the work that are not so easy. Here are some of the difficulties you might encounter when trying to reface your cabinets.
1. Measuring
Measuring cabinets for refacing is not an easy task. While new cabinets are usually square and true, old cabinets have usually changed shapes to a certain extent. Cabinet boxes warp, sag or settle so that getting an exact measurement becomes almost a guessing game. You have to make sure the doors and refacing supplies you buy will definitely cover the old surfaces, even though they are not even. The most obvious answer is to get everything a little bigger than is needed. However, it is difficult for a novice to know just how much bigger to go to take in all the variation without overdoing it.
2. Removing
Taking off all the old parts that you are replacing is a delicate job. You need to get the original parts off without damaging the parts of the cabinets you are replacing. The cabinet refacing expert must be at once gentle and forceful to get the cabinets stripped down and ready for the new doors, drawer fronts and trims.
3. Sanding
Anyone who has done much sanding will understand the concept that sanding is an art. Sand too vigorously and you gouge into the wood. Sand too lightly and you do not accomplish your purpose. Some people make the mistake of using a power sander when they should only use sandpaper, rubbed on the surface by hand. It takes just the right touch to get the wood sanded perfectly to the level you need it without destroying the surface. That makes this part of cabinet refacing difficult.
4. Installing New Doors
Installing hinges on the new cabinet doors can be tricky if you have never done it before. The doors usually do not come with predrilled holes for the hinges, so you have to measure where the screws go. Then, you have to use a drill to insert the screw in the exact location needed. Once the hinges are on the doors, they can be put up on the cabinet boxes. They still have to be measured and fitted exactly to the opening for the best cabinet refacing job.
5. Installing Drawer Fronts
Before you even begin to add the new drawer fronts, you have to know whether you have a 3-sided or a 4-sided drawer. A 4-sided drawer has a separate board for the decorative drawer front besides the 4 normal sides of the drawer. Once you have determined that, you have to learn the two different ways to mount the fronts depending on this criterion. All in all, cabinet refacing is a difficult job, but it is one that an expert can do for a reasonable cost.
