Are You Supposed To Tip The Delivery Driver?

By:

Tipping is a custom that is not uniformly performed around the world. In countries where tipping is customary, it can still be confusing as to who should be tipped, and how much of a tip is appropriate. Not knowing whether it is appropriate or not to tip can be uncomfortable. For delivery drivers, tipping is not always called for. However, there are instances where it is very appropriate to tip a driver working for a messenger service in Chicago.

For some deliveries, tipping is routine. Pizza delivery drivers usually receive tips equal to ten percent or more of the food they deliver. Floral delivery drivers also often collect tips when they deliver flower arrangements.

But, more often than not, deliver drivers do not accept tips. Part of this is because they are paid as if they do not receive tips. Other tipped employees are paid with the understanding that a large portion of their income will come from tips. Their actual hourly wage rate is relatively small, but they recoup that money in the form of tips.

Another factor is that delivery drivers simply do not have the time to accept tips. These drivers are running on very tight schedules in order to maximize the amount of deliveries they can make in a day. Pausing at each stop to receive a tip can eventually throw them way behind schedule.

However, if there is a driver that you see on a regular basis, then passing him a tip would not be a bad idea. A tip is an acknowledgement of a job well done. It is a way to say that you appreciate someone's service. If there are delivery drivers that handle packages for you routinely, then tipping them lets them know that you appreciate the work they do. It can also motivate them to take special care to make sure that your packages are handled properly and arrive on time.

Tipping is most common in the service industry. Employees from food servers to hair dressers are used to receiving tips. For delivery drivers, it depends on what kind of deliveries they make. The typical driver for a messenger service in Chicago is not used to receiving tips. They are paid well enough that tips are not necessary to supplement their income. That does not mean that someone cannot tip a delivery driver. It just means that it is not customary.
