Are You Qualified For A Job Promotion?

By:

You could have taken the proper steps throughout your career and still be overlooked for a promotion. This could be for a couple of reasons, including there's no opportunity for growth within your organization or management does not view you as promotable.

If you are turned down for a promotion, you have to make the decision as to whether you should resign or remain with your employer. As difficult as it may be, you should really take the time to step back and evaluate the situation objectively.

Set your emotions aside, and you will be able to make a well thought out decision. The following self-assessment will help with your decision making process.

* Is a management position available?

* Are you management material? If yes, make a list of the reasons you'd be a good manager.

* Take a hard honest look at the extra work you'd be required to do as a manager. Are you willing to put in the time?

* Since I have been carefully planning my promotion have I encountered uncomfortable situations? How did I handle them? Who was involved? What is my relationship with individuals involved after the fact?

*Think back to the last year. What leadership activities have you participated in? What were the results?

*Think about the last time you took a leadership role? How did the team react to your role? How did you feel in the role? What did you think went wrong? What do you think went right?

*What was the last big accomplishment you achieved that received recognition from management?

*Do you have the necessary education, training, certifications, or degrees to qualify for a promotion?

*Are you willing and able to come in early or stay late if the promotion requires it?

*Do you have the temperate to lead people? Or are you quick to get hot under the collar?

*As a manager you have to be a good public speaker. Rate your presentation skills?

This evaluation is a nice way to determine whether or not you should ask for the promotion. Also, depending on your responses whether or not you should move to another company if your request is denied.

Should you decide to render your resignation, keep your cool. Bad mouthing the company or your manager to anyone who listens will, without a doubt, hinder your career. After all, you will still need your manager as a reference.
