Are You Paying A Fuel Surcharge On Courier Shipments?

By:

Anyone who has ever shipped goods of any kind with a courier knows that the rate you are assessed for at your base shipping rate is only the beginning of the total amount which are going to be required to pay on your bill.

In addition to the money that it costs you to pay for the shipment of your goods, you are also going to likely see several different fees and surcharges on any bill from a St. Louis courier service. People understand that they are going to have to pay fees like this, but prefer knowing about them before they make their shipment instead of getting a nasty surprise on their billing statement.

If you ask a courier outright, they are required to make full disclosure on the fees and surcharges which they are going to asses you, so if you are worrying about what kinds of fees you might have to pay, including fuel surcharges, you may do best to simply ask outright as to whether or not you're going to have a fuel surcharge appear on your bill.

Asking is one way to find out if there is going to be a fuel surcharge on your shipping bills, but it is fairly easy to make an educated guess on your own as to whether or not this is going to be the case. When you make a shipment with no fuel surcharge attached to it, it can be a good idea to make a note of current fuel prices at the time of that order.

Fuel surcharges are not a means of the courier company getting more money, but instead a means of ensuring the drivers are getting a fair wage, because they pay for their own fuel. So, if you notice that fuel prices have risen significantly since you placed an order where there was no fuel surcharge, there is a good chance that you might see that appear on a bill when gas prices are higher.

However, even the best made guess based on reasonable information is still only a guess. Asking the company is still going to always provide you with the best answer in every situation. Also, you might want to think about it the other way as well. If you have been paying surcharges and notice the gas prices dropping, you should call the company and see if the fuel surcharge will no longer be appearing on your bills.
