Are You Overpaying Your Taxes?

By:

When most people think about taxes, they usually think:

- Taxes are scary

- I dread dealing with my taxes

- Thank goodness I only have to deal with my taxes once a year

- Taxes are a necessary evil

- There is no way I will ever understand my taxes

- All my hard earned money goes to pay my taxes

These things are heard on a regular basis from the media, family, friends and colleagues.

This type of thinking can lead to overpaying your taxes.

Studies in recent years found that over 2,000 small businesses overpaid their taxes by more than $11,000 in a single year.

The number one reason given for the erroneous overpayment of taxes is the perceived complexity of the tax code. This plays right into how most people are taught to think about taxes - that they are just too complicated to even try to understand.

Because of this, most people don't bother to understand how their taxes work. This can lead to dangerous results - like not knowing if their taxes are overpaid, underpaid or legally minimized.

How to Think About Taxes

I want to help others think about taxes differently, like:

- Taxes don't have to be scary

- I don't mind dealing with my taxes because I know the time I spend is absolutely saving me money

- Tax planning is something I do all year round

- Taxes help me stay in touch with the performance of my business and investments

- I know exactly what I need to do to legally reduce my taxes

- My tax savings can supercharge my wealth building

It does take focused time and effort to truly change how you think about taxes. This change in how you think about taxes helps lead to actions that result in better tax savings.

Thinking about taxes differently is not the same as being a tax expert. You don't have to be a tax expert. Of course, you'll want a tax expert on your team. Thinking about taxes in the right way helps leverage that team member's abilities.

Remember, the tax law (in the U.S. and in most developed countries) is written to favor businesses and investors which means there are huge opportunities to legally reduce your taxes. Many of these opportunities require you to think about your taxes differently.
