Are You In A Psycho Movie?

By:

Inside your head you are constantly at the mercy of deception and trickery. Your mind can not tell the difference between imagination and reality. If a man had his eyes closed when he kissed a hideous woman he could of persuaded himself she was a real beauty. When you imagine something vividly your mind functions as if it was real. (Like you can't quit smoking) This trickery can happen when you are watching an emotionally moving film and you find you have to flick a tear from your eye. In comedy shows the viewer grabs the whole box of tissues! Perhaps it's a scary movie, such as the classic Psycho, and it makes you jump out of your skin. It is reported that in the 1960s a moviegoer even died in the audience of a heart attack while watching Psycho.

Your imagination can even alter your physical state. Imagine you are staying in a strange house and you suddenly hear something odd downstairs. This is an experience we have all had, even in our own homes. That peculiar thing sounds like someone moving about. Your heart starts beating hard. It's thumping so much you feel that it would pop out of your chest. Your breathing increases to a panting rate. You listen carefully and then you hear that sound again. What on earth could it be? You're convinced there's an intruder in the house. Despite your fear you grab a heavy object as if to defend your self and you bravely wander down the stairs. Your hands are sweating, your heart is thumping, your breathing is accelerated. What sort of horror are you going to find? You creak open the kitchen door and find … nothing. You imagined the whole scene. In a second your whole body relaxes again, yet only a second earlier it was working overtime, just because of a thought and because of your imagination. Don't feel embarrassed. You don't have to be neurotic to hear sounds in the night.

The mind plays these tricks in all sorts of ways. They don't have to be frightening. I remember watching a famous formula 1 driver sitting in his race car. It was a close up shot of him swaying his head from side to side. I thought he must be doing 200mph. Then the camera panned back to show that he was in actual fact stationary and was waiting for the race to begin. What he was doing was using his imagination. In his mind he was rehearsing vividly steering the correct racing line through every corner of the circuit. He was convincing himself that he was racing along, but he was also convincing me.

PRACTISING THE EMPOWERING BELIEF.

Here is a great exercise for you. Firstly, what would you need to believe in order to know that you will stop smoking and never smoke again?

Now imagine that you really believe it.

What does that look like, feel like and sound like?
