When buying a ferret cage make sure there is enough room, it is very important so your ferret can have plenty of room run around. Make sure all levels are even so there are no gaps so your ferret will not get caught in a gap and get hurt. Soft bedding will make your ferret feel safe and comfortable.

A clean cage is a must, plastic bottom cages are easy to clean but metal bottoms can rust and become dingy after a lot of washings. Please make sure your ferret is not chewing on the coating, because this can cause intestinal blockages. Multi-layered cages with large doors will keep your ferret from getting stuck when trying to get out. The more hammocks and sleeping sacks the merrier. A happy ferret is a comfortable ferret, they sleep about 15-20 hours a day. Ferrets need to spend two hours a day outside their cage, so it is best to ferret proof a specific room for there safety.

Toys for ferrets means lots of fun, but safety should also be considered. Be careful which toys you purchase. You need durable toys that can withstand the chewing done by your ferrets sharp teeth. Cat toys are great for ferrets, no foam or plastic toys for ferrets, they will destroy them easily. They must always be supervised when playing with toys, please do not leave toys in there cage. If your ferret damages a toy and eats a piece it can result in an obstruction that will need to be surgically removed.

Ferrets are part of the Mustelid family, therefore, they do have an odor to them. It is a good idea to set up an appointment with your vet to have your ferret neutered and de-scented. Usually both of the procedures can be done at the same time. Please be sure to follow the veterinarians aftercare instructions to ensure your ferrets health. Ferrets need vaccinations and regular exams, make sure you are aware of when they received their shots, and continue the series. After the first series of distemper shots are done then your ferret will only need the shot annually. Ferrets also require their booster vaccination.

The type of food you feed your ferret is important, just be sure that their high quality cat food or ferret food is not produced from frozen meat. Before you bring your pet home find out what they were being fed and try to use the same brand. Although, if you choose to switch brands you must wean the ferret off the old food. Mix a small amount of the new food in with the old food and gradually increase the quantity of the new food daily until the ferret becomes used to the new taste. Snacks are not necessary and can cause many future health problems. If you decide to give a treat, some healthy options are cook eggs and meat. No sugar, it will only harm your ferret.

Bringing your ferret home will take some planning, but it will be worth it, so your new fuzzy family member will be safe and healthy.
