Are You Downloading Music Legally?

By:

Trying to figure out which online sites offer legal music can sometimes be very difficult. Just about anyone can upload their music and media to the internet and offer it to other users. Even though methods to share your music have become easier, you still require the permission of the copyright company to legally distribute their music or videos. Downloading from illegal websites carries the risk of being charged, or more likely, extracting a virus. There are several things to look for when determining whether a site offs legal or illegal downloads.

These MP3 sharing sites are becoming harder and harder for the record companies to track. It may be tempting to go with a site that isn't legitimate. However in the long run you will risk getting caught like several other have as well as you will have stolen what you have. While it can be difficult to tell if a site is legitimate or not there are several signs that give away a sites non-legitimacy.

The first and most obvious sign of illegal sharing is when you can download as much as you want for free. In most cases these sites are user sharing sites that will allow you to download illegally as much as you want. Some websites will have a small amount of music that is not copyrighted however for most sites this is not the case.

Since it's illegal for sites to host and upload copyright material they just let users share it so that they can't be held liable. You have to be cautious of these sites because there are so many of them and some even to claim to be legitimate when they clearly are not. If users are allowed to share files freely between each other you should be cautious about it's legitimacy.

Even if a website does charge users it does not automatically make it legal. The website may be simply turning a profit off downloads without returning any to the copyright companies. Unfortunately it will be very hard for you to tell exactly where the funds from a website go. Checking into these details is far too time consuming and difficult to rely on while searching for a reputable company. You can however, search for complaints and blogs online to figure out what other people have found regarding the site.

The easiest way to find a legal MP3 downloading site is to find a major online distributor. Well known downloading sites like Napster and iTunes can be counted on to provide clean downloads without worry. The only downside is that you will have to pay for each song or for a subscription to purchase the songs. Most importantly, remember to keep your music and videos purchased to you. Even after you buy them the copyright companies still own the information and don't want you to give it away to people who haven't purchased it. You can however, make copies for yourself.
