Are You An Ideal Candidate For Dental Implants? Find Out Here

By:

Dental implants are an artificial tooth root that secures the artificial tooth in the same manner that a real tooth is anchored in the gum. Since dental implants involve the gum and the bone, the ideal candidate is someone who has good dental health. This means that all the existing teeth are in good shape, with no cavities, and that the gums are in good health as well. There should be no gingivitis or any other type of gum disease.

Ideal candidates will also have good bone structure in their gums. This is because the dental implants will be anchored in the bone so the bone has to be strong and solid and there has to be enough of it.

What would cause a person to not have enough bone? A deformity of the upper or lower jaw might mean inadequate bone structure. This would include children born with a cleft. Even children with intact jaw bones still may not qualify for dental implants until their bone structure has finished growing. As we age, our bone structure might also recede, causing an insufficient amount of bone to be present for dental implants. Either way, to have dental implants will require bone grafting if the bone structure is insufficient. This means building up the bone structure by taking bone from another part of the body.

Another factor that qualifies a person as an ideal candidate for dental implants is their level of overall health. After all, getting dental implants requires surgery and that means general anesthetic and recovery. You must be in good overall health in order to be able to handle this. If you are immune deficient, a smoker, use drugs, are a hemophiliac, or are a diabetic, then you might not qualify for dental implants and your body might reject the implant if you do have it done.

The best way to find out if you might qualify for dental implants is to meet with your care team. Contact your cosmetic dentist and meet with your periodontist as well. With these people on your team, if dental implants are possible, you will have them and your smile will be amazing.
