Zombies are coming to attack you, and you have nowhere to go. You arent armed to defend yourself. What do you do? Plants vs. Zombies gives you a single option: to tactically surround your home with a number of plants-carrying-weapons. The plants and the zombies both come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and are slowly appearing into the games as you play.

More often than not, a vast garden with a pond running down the middle is the setting of the game. Youre either on your front lawn or your background, which is divided into grids, allowing you to put plant of your own liking on each square. As you put up your defenses that can include up to 50 different plants, zombies will make their way to your house and do damage. But although you have a wide range of plants to choose from, you cant really use more than 10 different species within a single level. For instance, undamaged wall-nuts are good defense against zombies, while peashooters (as the name suggests) shoots peas. Sunflowers, meanwhile, are useful to collect the sun that serves as the currency of the game. The trick is to carefully and methodically select the kinds of plans youre taking into each level, as your defense expands.

To keep the game interesting, there are levels that can be played as minigames. Examples include levels in which you use wall-nuts in bowling, and other levels where the plants in your defense are randomly picked out. You can also choose to separately play the minigames that pop up during the game. Theres a menu that lists over 20 different minigames that you can play. You can fight against invisible zombies; you can play a Bejeweled version of your plants, and you can even breed your own zombies in a zombiquarium.

Unfortunately, the multiplayer mode cant be played online, but it doesnt mean you cant enjoy it with a friend. If youre playing as the plants, the only difference of competitive and solo play is that you need to attack motionless zombies on the right of the screen, while setting up the defense of your home.

However, if youre playing as the zombie, you have to select the best of your kind to attack the house and protect your fellow creatures. Though you can only choose up to 5 per level, you can still pick out 18 kinds of zombies for your strategic plan. If you go for a custom made game which gives you the option to choose what kinds you want, you can include some damaging munchers in lineup. Your selection includes catapult zombies that maneuver vehicles equipped with long-range weapons; trashcan zombies that can be a tad dense but have a lot of weapons; and Digger zombies that dig under the garden and then attack from behind. On the other hand, if you opt for the quick-play versus option, both players can only use the basic types.
