Are You A Good Candidate For Weight Loss Surgery?

By:

If you are one of the millions of Americans who have tried everything possible to lose weight, you are not alone. Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions in our society. And for this reason, weight loss surgeries are becoming more and more popular. If you have considered surgical intervention as a means to overcome your weight problem, you may have wondered what makes a person a good candidate for weight loss surgery.
The first factor that is considered when determining whether or not a person makes a good candidate for weight loss surgery is their BMI, or Body Mass Index. If you are unfamiliar with what your BMI is, it is basically the percentage of your body weight that is made up of fat. You can get a pretty good idea of your BMI by using any BMI calculator (easily available online). In order to be a candidate for weight loss surgery, you generally have to fall into the category of being morbidly obese, that is have a BMI of 40 or greater. A normal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, so a BMI of 40 is clearly very high. Occasionally, a person with a BMI of 35 or greater can be considered a viable weight loss surgery candidate if they have other obesity related health concerns, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
In addition to your BMI, your doctor will consider other pertinent factors such as your age (generally, you must be at least 18 to undergo weight loss surgery), your overall health (no doctor is going to risk surgery if you have underlying health issues that make it particularly dangerous), have a low chance of success with non-surgical weight loss methods, and have a clear understanding of the risks and benefits associated with the weight loss surgery.
Weight loss surgery is definitely not the best option for everyone, but it may be the best option for you. If you believe you may make a good candidate for weight loss surgery, the first step you need to take is to discuss it with your doctor.
